Standard Cup Holder Sizes: Will Your Drink Fit?

How big is a standard cup holder, why do slim cans rattle in it, and how do you make any can fit? A quick, practical guide to cup holder sizes.

Most car cup holders are built around the standard 12 oz soda can, which is about 2.6 inches across. The holder openings themselves usually run a little wider, roughly 2.9 to 3.4 inches, so they can take everything from cans to travel mugs.

Why slim cans don't fit

Slim energy-drink cans - Red Bull, Celsius, White Claw, Michelob Ultra - are only about 2.1 inches across. In a holder built for wider cans that leaves a big gap, so the can wobbles, leans, and tips.

How to make a slim can fit

The fix is an insert that fills the gap. The Skinny Can Holder is 3 inches across on the outside, so it seats firmly in a standard cup holder, and it steps down on the inside to grip a 2.1 inch slim can. It stands about 3 1/4 inches tall with tiers sized for 8.4, 12, 16, and 20 oz cans.

  • Standard can: about 2.6 inches across
  • Slim can: about 2.1 inches across
  • Skinny Can Holder: 3 inch base that grips down to the slim can
